Dental Implants
Dental implants can be effective in scenarios where tooth loss has occurred due to injury or infection. They are also an optional alternative to dental bridges or dentures. The implants are substitutes for the roots of teeth and they are surgically anchored into the jawbone. They act to stabilize the new artificial teeth that are attached to them.
Tooth Extractions
Surgical tooth extractions are typically more complicated than routine extractions at your dentist. These types of extractions are generally reserved for cases where a tooth has not broken through the gums yet. During the extraction procedure an oral surgeon will make a small incision in the gum line. Sedation methods help to make the patient as comfortable as possible.
Wisdom teeth are the very last teeth to erupt into your mouth. When these teeth align properly and the gum tissue is healthy, they don’t have to be removed. Unfortunately, this is often not the case. The extraction of wisdom teeth becomes necessary when they cannot erupt. Impacted teeth can lead to several problems and they can grow in all directions as they try to find a path that will help them erupt successfully.
When wisdom teeth are only partially erupted the opening that forms around the tooth allows for infection that leads to swelling and pain among other symptoms. The pressure that results from this partial eruption may move other teeth and this can affect the natural alignment of your teeth. The removal of an impacted tooth generally resolves these issues and early removal is usually recommended to avoid the problem altogether.
